Omega-3 Fatty Acid Compound Found to Halt Cancerous Tumor Growth and Metastasis

Mainstream media sources continue to trumpet headlines about the decline in cancer rates leading many to believe that modern medicine has conquered this devastating disease through a systematic regimen of slashing, burning and poisoning. Yet nearly 1.7 million people will be diagnosed with some form of cancer this year and more than 550,000 will die from the number two killer of men, women and children. These statistics should not be surprising as millions of unsuspecting individuals continue to avoid lifestyle modifications that have been shown to dramatically lower the risk of cancer.

Omega-3 DHA Metabolite Stops Cancerous Metastasis by Halting Blood Supply to Tumors
Many people would be amazed to know that there are a host of natural nutrients that have been scientifically validated to prevent, treat and halt the metastatic spread of some of the most invasive cancer lines. Researchers from the University of California Davis Health System have found that a product resulting from a metabolized omega-3 fatty acid helps combat cancer by cutting off the supply of oxygen and nutrients that fuel tumor growth and spread of the disease. They have published their findings in the prestigious journal, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The bioactive long-chain omega-3 fat, docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), found in its free form in fatty fish and fish oil supplements, is broken down by the body into a metabolite form known as epoxy docosapentaenoic acid (EDP). Scientists know that tumor growth is promoted by the process of blood vessel formation called angiogenesis, and determined that by inhibiting this growth pattern, EDP reduces the growth and metastatic spread of tumors in a mouse model. This research provides the first scientific evidence about EDP’s potent anti-cancer, anti-metastatic effects.

Lead study author, Dr. Guodong Zhang commented “Our investigation opens up a new understanding of the pathways by which omega-3 fatty acids exert their biologic effects… as far as we know, EDPs are the first signaling lipids that have been discovered to have such potent anti-cancer effects.” Researchers found that as EDP’s are broken down through normal body enzymatic metabolism, the metabolites of these lipids can act to suppress the growth of new blood vessels that are necessary to feed tumor growth.

The researchers also found that an imbalance of omega-6 fats to omega-3 fats that occurs in a diet high in sunflower and corn oils produces a metabolite known as arachidonic acid (ARA) that has the opposite effect of EDP. ARA increases angiogenesis and tumor progression and is a primary dietary cause of cancer development and metastasis. The study team concluded “Our results designate EDP as a unique mediator of an angiogenic switch to regulate tumorigenesis.” Additionally the scientists have established a firm link between omega-6 and omega-3 fat ratios in the development of cancer. Nutrition experts recommend 1,200 to 2,400 mg of EPA/DHA from a distilled fish oil supplement to lower the risk from cardiovascular disease and cancer progression.

Low Levels of Omega-3 Fats Accelerate Brain Aging and Dementia



Omega-3 fats including DHA and EPA are preferentially selected by the human body to form the critical cellular membrane boundary separating the cell nucleus and DNA with the surrounding extracellular environment. The precise fatty acid composition of the membrane determines permeability properties for the passage of essential materials such as oxygen, micronutrients and glucose required for proper cell function.

Researchers publishing in Neurology, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology, have found that a diet lacking in omega-3 fatty acids may cause your brain to age faster and lose some of its memory and cognitive capabilities. Regular fatty fish consumption or supplementing with a molecularly distilled form of fish oil is shown to improve memory and thought retention and may significantly lower the risk of cognitive decline associated with the progression of Alzheimer’s disease.

Low Blood Levels of Omega-3 Fats Impact Cognition and Learning Processes
An extensive volume of research over the past decade has demonstrated that eating fish several times each week or supplementing with fish oil standardized to provide equivalent  concentrations of the long chain fats, EPA and DHA improves brain development and improved levels of cognition as we age. Dr. Zaldy Tan of the Easton Center for Alzheimer's Disease Research at the University of California in Los Angeles noted “People with lower blood levels of omega-3 fatty acids had lower brain volumes that were equivalent to about two years of structural brain aging.”

Researchers assembled 1,575 individuals with an average age of 67 who were deemed free of dementia. The participants were given an MRI brain scan and took tests that measured mental function, body mass index (BMI) and the omega-3 fatty acid levels in their red blood cells. Scientists determined that those people in the lowest quartile of red blood cell DHA saturation had lower brain volume compared to people who had higher DHA levels. They also scored lower on tests of visual memory and executive function.

Eat Fatty Fish or Supplement with DHA Daily to Prevent Cognitive Decline
Dr. Tan and his team found a direct correlation between circulating levels of omega-3 fats and performing everyday tasks such as problem solving, multi-tasking and abstract thinking. The study team concluded “Lower RBC (red blood cell) DHA levels are associated with smaller brain volumes and a ‘vascular’ pattern of cognitive impairment even in persons free of clinical dementia.”

Nutrition experts recommend eating fatty fish at least three times per week to obtain adequate levels of the pre-formed omega-3 fats, DHA and EPA. Alternatively, you can supplement with distilled fish oil gel-caps providing between 1,200 and 2,400 mg of EPA/DHA fats (higher amounts indicated for optimal cardiovascular and brain health protection) to reduce the effects of brain aging and maintain normal brain volume as you age.

Omega-3 Fat, DHA Boosts Brain Metabolism to Lower Alzheimer’s Disease Risk


Several recently published articles highlight the critical importance of Omega-3 fats from fatty fish consumption and fish oil supplements. Scientists publishing in the journal Stroke demonstrate that the active DHA Omega-3 fat component helps brain cells to better withstand the stress load placed on the aging brain to lower the risk of a life-altering stroke by as much as a quarter.

Researchers from the Rhode Island Hospital`s Alzheimer`s Disease and Memory Disorders Center have found that DHA from supplements alter the critical brain chemistry and structure to prevent cognitive decline and abnormal brain aging. A wealth of scientific evidence is mounting to document the importance of Omega-3 fats to assist metabolic disorders that lead to dementia, stroke and chronic disease.

DHA, Omega-3 Fat Lowers Brain Inflammation to Improve Cognitive Function
Inflammation of the vital nerves and critical structures of the brain is a precursor to stress that can play an important role in the development of a life-altering stroke. Researchers publish the result of their work designed to determine if Omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil, specifically the long-chain DHA component would be sufficient to reduce neural inflammation and lower risk from a stroke.

To conduct the study, mice were broken into three groups. The first group was supplemented with a DHA-enriched diet, the second group consumed a DHA-depleted diet and the final mice were fed a control diet. After a period of three months, scientists found that only the group with the DHA-enriched diet experienced lower levels of neuroinflammation and had 25% less tissue injury following an induced stroke. They also noted that long-term supplementation resulted in a healthy buildup of DHA fat in brain tissue resulting in an enhanced Omega-3 to Omega-6 fatty acid ratio.

Consumption of Omega-3 Fats Protects the Brain to Lower Damage from a Stroke
Lead author on the study, Dr. Jasna Kriz concluded “This is the first convincing demonstration of the powerful anti-inflammatory effect of DHA Docosahexaenoic acid Essential Omega 3 fatty acid integral to the health of all cell membranes, nerve and brain function. The consumption of omega-3s creates an anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective environment in the brain that mitigates damage following a stroke.”

Additional evidence of the importance of Omega-3 fats from fish consumption or supplementation is provided by researchers from Rhode Island Hospital. A study was designed using 819 senior participants broken into three groups, those with normal cognition, mild cognitive impairment, and Alzheimer`s Disease. 117 individuals were taking fish oil supplements during the three year course of the study. Taking fish oil supplements was associated with less brain shrinkage and improved cognitive function during the study period.

The lead author, Dr. Lori Daiello concludes, “In the imaging analyses for the entire study population, we found a significant positive association between fish oil supplement use and average brain volumes in two critical areas utilized in memory and thinking.” DHA is preferentially conserved for the construction of neural structures and should be an essential part of your regular menu (from fatty fish) or as a molecularly distilled and purified supplement (500 mg to 1 gram per day) to lower stroke risk and prevent cognitive decline.

DHA Omega-3 Fat Protects Arteries, Heart and Can Prevent Blindness

As the population of American baby boomers continues to swell, age related afflictions including diabetes, cardiovascular disease and complications such as blindness are growing at a similar pace. Omega-3 Fats Provide Critical Protection Against Heart Attack

DHA becomes incorporated into the cell wall structure where it stabilizes existing plaque, making it less likely to break off and cause a stroke. The journal Science Translational Medicine reports the result of research that demonstrates how DHA regulated genes that can prevent blindness. By halting unnecessary growth, DHA regulates vessel formation so that healthy blood vessels form and undesirable ones do not.

Fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel, herring and trout are ideal sources of Omega-3 fats including the DHA fraction. Due to the ever-increasing problem of mercury contamination in fish, supplementation is well advised.
